Quitter or Failure?

When does a writer become classified as a failure? Who makes that decision? Is there a secret number that if you don’t hit it you are forever ranked as a failure?

There seems to be this idea from non-writers that if the author they know hasn’t hit the New York Times Best Seller List then they’ve failed. I don’t agree, but there comes a time when you probably need to reevaluate what you are doing if you aren’t hitting the goals you set for yourself. (As long as they are realistic goals)

A couple of things happened this past week that have caused me a bit of self-doubt and admittedly some tears and made me wonder when someone becomes known as a failure. Is it after they try to do everything that everyone says works and steering clear of the things that supposedly don't work? Or is it just as simple as, they are a failure when they think they are one?

1) I see authors behaving badly on social media. Responding to bad reviews, calling out their friends for not buying their books, bad mouthing other authors, and throwing themselves pity parties all because they’ve been doing this for so long and have nothing to show for it.

They do the one thing that every single Marketing book says not to do and yet they are top-selling in their genre. Although if you listen to them they are barely selling, but look at their numbers and they are tops in their genre.

This leads me to believe that maybe people really do inherently flock to drama. Maybe these authors aren’t so much “behaving badly” as they are marketing geniuses!

That’s crazy, you say? Really? On any given post on social media by an author bashing a bad review, talking about giving up because sales are low, or threatening to cull their friends lists to get rid of “haters” you will find – I shit you not- between 25-100+ comments on those threads. Either backing up the authors claims that the bad review is bullying, ego stroking them to tell them not to quit and recommending friends to buy the authors books, or begging to stay in that author’s “Inner Circle” because they are such loyal fans.

It’s a marketing win! Hello! These people are getting fresh exposure whenever they do these posts. It’s genius.

I still won’t go that route… But hey, they found something that works, and even better not a lot people do it (since we all read the books that say it’s a no-no). They reap the benefits. Good on them, but it still leaves me feeling blah about my own marketing. And so, I need to reevaluate my plan. Their plan won’t work for me but my current plan isn’t working so well either.

2) The other issue comes from family. Extended family, but family none the less. I could probably just leave it at that, since Family, even distant family, always knows how to hurt you most. They know the weak spots in our armor.

An extended family member asked me how my “little writing thing” was going. When I said, “It’s going.” They asked how many books I’ve sold… I hate that question. It seems so inappropriate. I would never ask someone how much money was in their bank account or how much cash they have in their wallet, but for some reason being invasive is okay when the person is merely writing “little stories”.

Anyways, I told them my numbers and they gave me one of these --> O.O <-- looks and said, “Wow… That’s it? I think it’s safe to say it’s time to throw in the towel and call it a good try.”

I didn’t feel up to arguing after that ego punch so I simply nodded and walked away. When I got home I let it eat at me. In truth it is still eating at me. I started looking at all the things I am doing wrong…

I’m spending too much time with my family. I could be writing more if we didn’t go do things or if I sent my kids to tutoring instead of helping them with homework. I spend too much time with my animals. I could probably learn something like formatting if I didn’t give them so much of my attention… But honestly these are things that I will not give up.

So I started looking at the other wrongs I’ve committed: I don’t have a dedicated editor. I rely on beta readers and numerous rounds of edits. Sure I’ve had people (several different people) edit my books, but I have no one who I have their full attention because the people I work with also write for themselves and have work of their own to do. So I started scanning the internet trying to find someone affordable… Still waiting on that.

I don’t know how to format. I have to rely on others and hope that I am not imposing on their time to get my stuff formatted.

I don’t know HTML… That could be useful too.

As my extended family member reminded me the other day: Successful authors pay for editing, formatting, and web-based stuff… Hell they have assistants, street teams, agents, etc… And I am here trying to do it by myself with the help of friends and trying to offset favors with trades and in the end feeling like I am spread too thing and failing.

I told my husband the other night “I’d rather quit than be a failure.” He said, “You’re only a failure if you quit.” (Which is what Alex said to me too.)

Would I really quit? No, not really. I just needed to say it out loud for a moment and embrace my own private pity party. I’ve been writing and telling stories long before anyone cared to read them. So no I am not quitting.

I don’t have huge sales, I’m not selling 50 books a month. I don’t have 100+ comments on my posts, but in the end what I do have is a handful of real friends who read what I write and tell me they love it. I have some solid reviews, even if they don’t number in the thousands. And lastly, I have my kids and ironically an estranged husband who are proud of me for doing what I am doing and for not giving up and who will always indulge me when I need to cry, or vent, or have myself a pity party.
That’s really all I need. I’m not here with delusions of making it big, hitting #1 spots on lists, or to have 5000 friends. I’m here for me, my stories, and for my friends and family who support me in this adventure.

Am I still feeling blah? Sure, but later today I’ll fire up Scrivener and write some more, because I can’t – not write – it’s in my blood and if I stopped I wouldn’t know what to do with myself.

P.S. After writing this all up I received an email about my Ellora’s Cave book, I got my first blog review for Twisted Revenge and it was a 4.5 star review. That helped make this day less gloomy. So while that has nothing to do with the self-publishing aspect it serves as a reminder: There’s always a silver lining.

Will they both overcome their shadows that haunt each of them?
Is there ever a way to forgive and forget when death is involved?
Special Assignment - The only thing special about this assignment are the two people involved.

Review: What can I say but wow? I'm a bit new to the world of Erotic Suspense, but I really feel like I hit the nail on the head with what I like to read in this genre and holy cow does Ms. Becker just steal me away with this book. I have to say that I think my favorite thing is that the characters aren't perfect. At all. A lot of times you find that either the guys is perfect (with a dash of a tortured past) or the woman has no real past and one of them ends up falling flat. That is not the case with Charlie and Jake! The two have a past together that they can't get rid of and it creates amazing chemistry between them. It gives a realistic aspect to the story.
The plot had me hooked right away. It's not often that you have someone killed within the first fifty words of a book. The twists and turns weren't predictable which I liked. I found myself reading a page here and there where I could and often forgetting that I was reading on my phone instead of my e-reader. I just got sucked in. The sex was amazing, there was a nice verity of it, which helped from keeping it repetitive. I highly recommend that if you like erotica and suspense, pick this book up!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Why indie authors need an editor

As indie authors, we have a few disadvantages one of them being editors. We have to find, hirer, and pay our own editors. Some of us get lucky and have connections others not so much. Some may be able to get by with an extra pair of eyes (or five...) however, some authors think that they don't need editors. At all. I attended an editor's group for a year and it was a joke. Everyone would set deadlines to have projects finished by and no one would stick to them. I started to feel like an over achiever and then I brought my editor with me to check out the group and hopefully show them why it was important to have an editor. These are the two responses that stuck with me. RM: I do all my own editing so I don't need an editor. I don't want anyone messing with my style. T: There isn't an editor who understands my work, so I don't give it to one.

Now...there are very few authors who can self edit to the point of not needing, at the very least, extra eyes. My editor almost passed out, she was so shocked at the response. So, why do we need editors and/or extra eyes? Take a look:

See all that purple, that's grammar and typos that my editor found in a work (under my other personality.) That's after I read through it for the ARCs. Now, I will admit that grammar is not my strong point, but there were a lot of typos that I missed. (Some very obvious ones, sweatpants pants, the his townhome, yeah....) My eyes scanned right over them because I knew what it was supposed to say. So my advice to you, get an editor, get an extra pair of eyes at the very least. I know that just starting authors can't always afford an editor, but use your resources. My editor is a college student in school for editing, she just finished an advanced grammar class (only person I know who says it's fun to diagram books. Seriously...) we exchange coffee for edits and so she can use my books on her resume when she needs to.

Mia used a combination of people to polish up WUIB. It can be done, but when you can, spend the money on a good editor. Look for their credentials, ask them to edit a section for you so you can get the feel on if they are a good match. Put some effort into it people, because nothing is worse than a bunch of bad reviews do to an unprofessional book. Also...pass it through some beta readers first. Your editor shouldn't deal with a first draft...that's just mean.

Author Interview: Terry R. Hill

Please welcome Terry R. Hill to SPE! We asked him some questions to get to know about his own publishing journey.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a Texas native, was trained with two degrees in aerospace engineering. I have worked for NASA since 1997 with a very satisfying career as an engineer and project manager spanning programs from the international space station's navigation software, to next generation space suit design, to exploration mission planning, to mitigating the health effects of space on astronauts. While supporting the manned space program has been a lifetime passion, writing of different worlds, alternate
futures and the human condition has filled my spare time.

Always looking to maximize what life has to offer, I have found myself singing on stage, helping to house the less fortunate, skydiving, hammering away at the Berlin Wall, wearing space suits, ice swimming in Finland in the dead of winter, bathing in the hot springs of Japan, and forging into the unknown as a parent. Life is too short to let opportunities pass us by as we only get one chance to ride. But mostly, it's all about the people in our everyday as we experience this thing we call Life.

What led you to your decision to indie publish?

Well like many major decisions in life, all the right things had to fall into place. I won’t go into those in detail, but let’s say that one day last year I accepted the fact that I probably had fewer days ahead of me than behind and that I had best get to writing if I was to get serious about it. I had always enjoyed writing and had received support from friends and co-workers over the years, but never took the time to indulge myself with writing until one day I realized I needed to add more Awesome to my daily life, and writing was my preferred way.

What is the biggest mistake that you’ve learned from when Indie publishing?

I would say that my biggest mistake so far was rushing into the first print run. I put a lot of pressure on myself to get it out the door and into people’s hands. What I discovered was that there were a dozen or so typos that had escaped my attention and now I had a hundred copies of my first publication with some embarrassing typos. J I had a very good editor, but somewhere between his editing and my acceptance of them, some snuck in.

The moral to the story, unless your family is going hungry waiting for you to sell some books, then take the time to have a person or two proof the copy before releasing it and ordering multiples.

What is the worst piece of advice you received when you started writing?

You know, that’s a hard question. I can’t say that I’ve really gotten any really bad advice just yet. I had a few people suggest that I go with a vanity publishing company. And while one friend seems to be doing well with them, I don’t know if he’s made back the out-of-pocket money he had to front to get started with them.

What is the best advice you received?

“If you don’t know what to do, ask a few Indy authors – they’re, in general, a very helpful crowd.”

I whole-sale agree with that statement. I have reached out to many different people and gotten excellent and enthusiastic advice and developed a few good friendships along the way.

What is your advice to new authors trying to break into the self-publishing market?

A large part of it is what you make of it. You will get out of it what you put into it. You are now your own sales team – it’s not just about writing any more.
A large part of it is luck.
A significant part of it is what is selling at the time, vs what you’re writing.
If this is your only income, get used to eating Ramen noodles for a while. J
Research writing in the Deep Point of View.
Use 5+ beta readers.
Put your money in two places: Hiring a good cover artist, Hiring a good editor. Friends and Family are not allowed for either!!!!! If your cover assaults the eye, no one will pick it up. If your book is full of grammar, punctuation errors or typos, then the reader may not finish your book and worse yet, leave a nasty review.

What has been your favorite story to write?

Well, I suspect like many authors, I’m a little partial to the first one I wrote. However, each book is different and has unique things that you love and hate about them.

My first book…well, it was my first book. It was my baby. It was my first experience of making something from nothing and calling it my own AND have had people say that they really enjoyed it. It was what encouraged me to continue on this journey and validated that I might just have something to share with the world, and maybe making it a better place along the way.

Do you see yourself in any of the characters you write?

Oh of course! But not just one. I can’t speak for all authors, but each character carries a little bit of me in them. We as people are not just one person, one character all the time. We have good days and bad days. Some days we are saints on Earth and others we deserve to be locked up for a very long time. Some days I am deserving of the love of my wife and children and some days they are clearly getting the raw end of the deal.

So by tapping into those different facets of my personality, it allows each one to become its very one character, and allows the author to explore what they would be like if they were to think or behave like this all the time.

What is your most recent release about?

Wow, that’s hard to say in ten pages or less. J When I write, I like to give the reader a good story that is entertaining, has action, adventure, death, life, a little romance and some philosophy to ice the top.

However, in general In the Days of Humans: Third Exodus is about a world after the computer singularity happens, the struggle between Man and Machine took place and the world was deviated. Not a new story, but that was my chapter 1. The bulk of the book is what happened after the struggle where humans had to learn how to survive, and of the ones that were largely spared, they would eventually have to come to terms with the fact that they would soon run out of resources.

Faced with this reality the remaining governments decided to go for broke and develop a space program to venture out into the solar system to look for resources and possible a new home. However – yes, there’s always a however – while they are venturing into the blackness they run into an ancient intelligence, that was almost as old as the solar system, which had been placed there to watch and wait for space-faring life to evolve.

Corruption and politics prevail back on Earth, and faced with a new, unforeseen forces that threaten human survival once again, the lead character must decide where his loyalties lie – with a corrupt government back home, or with an alien intelligence that might have some unknown agenda – in some hope of saving humankind.

Where did you draw your inspiration for this book?

Wow, hard question. I had the idea come to me on a bad day when I was frustrated with work (I work at NASA) and I was just pondering “What if everything that NASA is doing is for naught. What if we never achieve the goal of figuring out how to live permanently in space or on another planet? What if it ends up being some group or country that we never expect?” That was the catalyst that got my imagination working and where ultimately I got the idea for the book. After that most of my ideas would come while driving to and from work listening to classical music.

I know, not terribly exciting, but that’s how it all happened.
J

What has been your most successful thing you've done to promote your book?

So far I would have to say it would have to be using Facebook and personal connections to spread the word. While I have not achieved nation-wide success just yet, from what I have seen, one must be in the right spot at the right time to get the visibility that stirs mass interest. Just waiting for the lightening to strike for me.

Who is your literary idol?

Oh my, I’m not sure I could tell you. There are so many out there that are masters at what they did/do. Each of them brings forth something unique and different to the reader and their experience in the different stories they tell. To name a few would surely do a disservice to those I don’t. Wells, Heinlein, Clark, Butler, Rothenberg, Anthony, Rand, Sagan, Hawking to name just some of the giants of recent history. This list doesn’t do anything for the not as famous, but equally talented authors or even many of the up and coming ones of today that I for time to time get the chance to read, meet and get to know.

Do you participate in writing events like NaNo?

No I haven’t. Not that I’m not interested, but between a full-time job, a young family and my own writing, I just have no way of squeezing in something else like this with time pressures of its own.

Two Short Stories & Alexandra's First Release

Both Alexandra and I had written up short stories with criminals as the main protagonist and both stories had the theme of being held captive. In the end our original plans for the stories didn't pan out so we thought, "hey we should combine them into one book and self-publish it." And in the end that is what we did.

So first off congrats to +Alexandra Webb on her first official release! She has two books coming out later this year from Ellora's Cave but this short story will be her first published work under this name.

Second, we don't do a ton of self promotion here but every once in a while it doesn't hurt to toot your own horn. If you enjoy erotica and are looking for a quick read come and check out Criminal Behavior when it releases on Friday. You will be able to find it on Smashwords and on Amazon.

We hope you enjoy reading them as much as we enjoyed writing them. And remember, word of mouth and reviews help indie authors so if you like what read please tell a friend, recommend it, and leave a review. We really do appreciate it.
